Server-Based Technology

There has been a buzz in the industry over downloadable games from a central server ever since Cyberview Technology advanced the technology and pioneered its use into new international gaming markets.

To some extent, the technology to deliver games to player terminals by means of downloadable content via a central server has existed for years. Gaming markets such as Native American casinos, video lotteries and various legal venues across Europe have utilized similar technology.

In the early 1990s, betting shops in England began utilizing the newer Cyberview server-based technology for their fixed odds betting terminals (FOBTs) and today these represent the most extensive uses of new, updated version of the technology in gaming. In 2004, the company secured the first certification of a system for traditional casinos in the U.S. It was the first-ever company to be granted technical certification by Gaming Laboratories International, Inc. (GLI) for a server-based downloadable gaming system in the U.S. casino market.

"Server-based" technology represents a major departure from traditional stand alone gaming machines in casinos today. In contrast to having the game reside in each machine on a separate game chip or EPROM, the game software is downloaded remotely to the terminal from a central server. This technology works with existing casino management systems, and the cabinetry and game play are identical to what's seen in casinos today.

What downloadable gaming provides, as does all technological advancements, are new and vastly improved ways to operate. For the casino manager, it provides the opportunity to have flexible control over the game styles, denominations, and themes on any number of slot machines linked to the central computer server system.
